Day 1 - Thanks to Brian Kelly

First Full day in Rome.  Ripped my mind out and put it back again.  Used Brian Kelly's gift of "The Families Who Made Rome" as my guide, beginning with the Cenci, Santacroce and Mattei families.  All villainous families who built a range of churches, fountains, villas and spaces.  The photos that follow chronicle my day.  Dayt ended with a great lecture by Chris Calenza the new head of the American Academy (and a JHU prof) on Machiavelli.  His final comment was: Machiavelli said that people always find fault with the present, since (to quote Machiavelli) "human desires are insatiable, because nature has given them the capacity and the possiblity to desire everything but fortune has decreed that they can only attain a little.  The result is a never-ending lack of satisfaction in people's minds and a weariness in what they have attained".
