Day 9 - Going back to 1975 - Villa Giulia

Day 9 starts with catching up to Day 8, and then a visit to the AAR and its library

The sequence into the AAR from my apartment is worth noting
History is all around us here

I went to the library this morning to research some of the things that I have seen......
This plan shows Trajan's markets and Trajan's column overlaid onto the new city street system

 prototypes of Temples
The site of St. Peter's before.......
 and after
Lunch today - I was lucky to sit next to Alice Waters......
Alice Waters and Adele Chatfield Taylor
Alice and Thomas
Walking into the City after lunch

 Nearing St. Peters........

Spanish Steps look like an illusion

 Relates to Thomas and Catie

Richard Meier's Museo dell' Ara Pacis
 Beautiful museum mounts and displays

The museum's role is to house this Temple and tell its' story.   That is it.........

.........and it does this beautifully

Horizontal glass fins shield the southern and western light.  Lessons for the JHU Viragh building.

The classic sin of modernism - a clear back dead leaf catching space.......
a very nice mod arch building nearby

a stylish passerby with green shoes.........
A great store.  Felt guilty for not buying shirts for all my European Football cronies.
 On to Piazza del Popolo
 !!!!!

Closed!! bummer.  Wanted to see the Caravagios

After a 1 hour walk, I finally make it to Villa Giulia.  A place that marked me for the better 38 years ago.  Thank you Art McDonald and Syracuse Univ Architecture Faculty.
Maybe the most beautiful place I have seen in Rome.  Sublime
 Calm and ordered
 Colorful
 Rational
The museum, which is fairly new, is amazing..........

 An amazing plan and section
 rebuilt ghost elemements.  Amazing
 Lovely individual pieces like this.......
 Crowns........
These beautiful glass displays are like train cars marching through the galleries.  There were maybe 20 or these!

 Ghost chariot
 fantastic displays
 ghosts
and people actively working on assembling the ghosts.

I love this building and all it represents..  This is back to my roots.

Thank you SU Architecture and Brian Kelly.
 The long walk home.....
rewarded with a birra.......

and a visit from Michael Iati and his beautiful wife Domique, here with Catie Newell.
